New to Health Insurance

Medical cover abroad

Selecting a health insurance plan in Ireland can be daunting given that there are over 340 schemes to choose from.

Use our simple checklist below to help guide you to the best value scheme for your needs:

  WHAT IT COVERS
(A) Decide on your maximum budget and disclose this to the insurer(s)
(B) There are only four health insurers in Ireland and their contact details are below;
(C) Challenge them to find the best value scheme that fits within your budget and ensure they review all their schemes
(D) Be aware of the waiting periods that apply to all new members. For example;
  • No cover for any new conditions for 6 months that present after joining
  • 12 month waiting period for services relating to maternity or fertility treatments
  • 5 year exclusion for any existing medical conditions present on joining
(E) Be aware of the age loadings that apply if you’re age 35 or over
(F) Whatever plan they recommend, have them explain exactly what’s covered and what’s not covered on the plan whilst on the call
(G) Discuss everything that’s important to you or your family, e.g. preferred hospitals, cover for any existing medical problems, travel cover, family planning etc.

Consider a full fee-based review of your cover or joining a health insurance webinar if you’re confused by all the options or if you have specific cover requirements
